Two of Derby County’s first-team squad joined children on holiday courses at Rykneld Sports Centre being ran by the Community Trust on Thursday afternoon.
The sessions run throughout the holidays and provide footballing and multi-sports activities for primary aged children.
The players got stuck into a range of activities that the youngsters were taking part in, including tournament football games and dodgeball.
Defender Jake Rooney said: “It’s great to get out into the community and see what the kids are getting up to. We’ve all taken part in activities like this in the school holidays, and it’s great that the Community Trust have so much going on for young people in the local area.”
Midfielder Darren Robinson added: “It’s really good to see so many kids down here today, all keeping busy throughout the school holidays. It’s important that they’re getting out of the house and keeping active, and it’s clear they’re all having a great time!”
After taking part in games, the players awarded today’s tournament winners and signed memento postcards for all participants to take away.
Sessions are also part of government-funded Holiday Activity and Food provision, which ensure children who are entitled to free school meals can access fun activities and healthy lunches over the break.
Derby County Community Trust run holiday coaching activity at Rykneld Sports Centre and Belper Leisure Centre, with further Holiday Activity and Food provision running at City of Derby Academy and Arborteum Park during each holiday.
Where government funding is unavailable, the Community Trust continues their support for families through the Rams Family Support project, which was launched last Autumn in response to the cost-of-living crisis.
