Derby County midfielder Liam Thompson described himself as 'over the moon' to play a key role in the side storming back from 2-0 down to beat Oxford United 3-2 on Friday evening.

Thompson came on as a late substitute to head home the equaliser to make it 2-2 with one of his first touches before Eiran Cashin headed in the winner just a few minutes later in a thrilling Sky Bet League One clash to see out 2023.

Craig Forsyth also got Derby's first goal of the night on the stroke of half-time which provided the side with a platform to build on in the second period at the Kassam Stadium as Paul Warne's side claimed their eighth win in nine league outings.

Speaking to RamsTV after the game, Thompson reflected on an incredible night in Oxfordshire.

On the comeback...

We're over the moon with it. It was great character shown by the boys and we're just really happy with the win. It is a big win. The games come thick and fast right now and the three points are massive. All the lads are buzzing and it just shows how close the group are and together with the celebrations.

On the recent fine run...

I think we're getting better and better as the games go by. We started slowly today, we know that, but I think we were the better team for the majority of the 90 minutes and, with the wins, the performances are getting better.

On staying patient in the game...

I think Oxford defended well but when you keep asking questions of them and putting balls in the box with the quality of delivery we've got, you've just got to keep going.

On the goal before half-time...

It was huge. We were saying on the bench that if we could nick one before half-time then it would give us momentum we could build on, so it was hugely important.

On his goal...

I couldn't believe it! It was a great ball in by Cash and I somehow got my head on it. I thought the goalkeeper was going to come and smash me, but I had to get there. I'm over the moon with it but more so with the win.

On the confidence to grab a winner...

Even at 2-0 down, in a way,, the confidence was there. We were the much better team for large parts and when the first one went in we really thought we could kick on and win it.

On nine unbeaten...

I think we should believe we can win every game that's put in front of us, why can't we? We knew today was going to be a challenge but the way we played, it shows how confident we are at the minute. We've got to keep ourselves grounded, keep working hard and anything can happen.

On Peterborough United...

They are in great form at the minute. We beat them at their place in August but it was quite a frantic game that could have gone either way. We're back at home, we're confident and I'd imagine it will be a very good game.
