CARABAO CUP POST-MATCH INTERVIEW: Sanderson says Derby can ‘take confidence’ from Burnley loss

Centre-back Dion Sanderson says Derby County can take confidence into Saturday’s trip to Ipswich Town after a narrow defeat to Premier League Burnley in Round Two of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

The hosts took the lead after four minutes via Jacob Ramsey at Turf Moor, but a spirited Derby performance saw them level after Bobby Clark took his first goal for the club in calm style.

A closely fought match-up was won at the last by Burnley, who took a 2-1 lead in added time with Oliver Sonne’s goal.

Sanderson caught up with RamsTV to reflect on the meeting with the Clarets.

On the defeat to Burnley in the Carabao Cup…

It was disappointing because we worked so hard to get back to 1-1. We've either got to go and chase that victory or we've got to see the game out at the end of the day and take it to penalties. The team worked so hard. I believe the fans deserved the victory today. We fell short at the end, so obviously it's disappointing.

On taking positives from the performance into the league…

We've shown what we've been working on in training and our fitness. It's hard to take out positives when you don't win. The team matched a Premier League side today, which was very good - they had bundles of quality.

On carrying forward momentum into the Championship…

We believed we could get the win today. Like I said, we fell short, but our confidence hasn't dropped at all. It's getting stronger, if anything. We've got another tough game against Ipswich. Confidence will be sky high, and we'll be looking to get three points.
