Josh Vickers praised Derby County’s ‘character and fight’ as they beat West Bromwich Albion on penalties at the Hawthorns to progress to Round Two of the Carabao Cup.

A stunning late free-kick from Joe Ward earned Derby a 1-1 draw against the Baggies and took the game to a penalty shoot-out, where two saves from Vickers and goals from Kenzo Goudmijn, Kayden Jackson, and Ebou Adams saw Derby through to the next round 3-2 on spot-kicks.
West Brom had taken the lead at the Hawthorns in the 66th minute and looked certain to qualify before Ward’s late dead ball turned the tables.
Vickers spoke to RamsTV after the knock-out clash against the Rams' Sky Bet Championship rivals.
It's brilliant to win. You want to win games of football and, thankfully, tonight we stuck in there and it came good at the end to get a really good result.

Character and fight is the least we can show. We might not be as good as we want to be on the ball some days, but character and fight will always be there with this group. We showed it at the back end of last season, and we've continued that into this year. That's one thing we can always give is 100%.

Whenever we know there is a possibility of penalties, we do our research day-to-day with Paul Clements and the analysis team as a goalkeeping group.
It's no secret, we have stuff written down. It's been well documented out there. That's what we do, and the players know that. Thankfully tonight it came off; preparation is everything.
You want to walk out onto the field and be prepared the best you can
to play, and you're giving yourself the best chance to win a game of
football. Tonight we did that.
