MATCH REPORT: Derby County B 4-0 Chesterfield Reserves

A dominant Derby County B Team display saw them run out 4-0 winners against Chesterfield Reserves in their opening Central League Cup fixture of the 2025/26 season on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Professional Development Phase Coach Danny Maye took charge of the B Team for the afternoon as they put in a controlled display at Moor Farm Training Centre.

Jamie Wähling’s first-half strike gave Derby a goal advantage before the break, and further goals from Sean Corry and a Cameron Wilson double in the second period sealed the win.

Key Moments

Derby took the lead in the 13th minute when German midfielder Wähling finished after Corry played him through in a swift attacking move.

Marley Mintus came close from a free-kick after the half-hour mark as he spun an effort from the edge of the box just over the crossbar.

Mintus forced a save from Chesterfield goalkeeper Tom Everest-Wilcock in the 41st minute as his effort from a tight angle was blocked at the near post after the attacker surged into the box and fashioned a shooting opportunity.

Justin Oguntolu fired close to the target in the final stages of the first half, as he dragged an effort just wide of the post.

Corry doubled Derby’s advantage minutes after the break, as a direct pass from deep slotted him in behind the visiting defence and he finished confidently with a strike across the goal.

Oguntolu nearly made it three in the 50th minute after a period of dominant possession allowed Corry to cross towards the back post, where the ball landed at the feet of the Rams' striker, whose effort was saved by Everest-Wilcock.

The third goal did come three minutes later as Scottish winger Wilson slotted home a well-worked attack from close range.

Wilson could have doubled his total in the 58th minute; he received the ball in the box and controlled it in a tight space to try for a goal, but his effort was well blocked by a Chesterfield defender.

Oguntolu charged in behind the Spireites backline on the hour, but a strong recovery from defender Fin Wood saw him put in a sliding challenge that denied the striker.

Momentum continued to go in Derby’s favour as substitute Niall McAndrew’s attempt was stopped by quick reactions from the Spireites’ goalkeeper, who got down low to save in the 75th minute.

Wilson made it 4-0 with seven minutes of regulation time remaining when he calmly tapped in from a close distance after another punishing Rams attack, which completed the scoring and saw the Derby come away victorious.

Post-Match Reaction

"It was a dominant display today,"Senior Professional Development Coach Danny Maye said after the contest at Moor Farm.

"Today's game was a good opportunity to try and break a team down. The first half was a little slow; we paused too often on the ball and allowed them time to get compact. We had some good moments, but didn’t look in control enough.

"Then in the second half, we were much better on that front; we moved the ball quickly in different areas of the pitch. This meant they had to keep sliding, and we eventually found gaps. We had far more control and created a lot. We just needed to be more clinical.

"As the game drew to a close, I felt our recoveries and overall defending around the box needed to stay consistent. That being said, it was great to get a clean sheet and a good win."
