COMMUNITY: Derby County quartet visit Football and Education Students

Derby County Community Trust recently welcomed Men’s First Team pair Josh Vickers and Richard O'Donnell and Women’s First Team duo Eve Shepherd and Hannah Sparkes to Derby Racecourse Hub to visit students on its Football and Education programme.

The Community Trust’s Football and Education programme currently exceeds 200 post-16 learners, studying a variety of qualifications across 6 different education venues. Depending on the learner’s academic ability, learners can study A Levels, BTEC Equivalents in Sport at Level 3, Level 2 and Level 1.

All students the Community Trust’s college programmes also play football for one of the Derby County Community Trust College teams.

The players spent time engaging with students, sharing stories from their careers and offering advice on what it takes to succeed both on and off the pitch. Students had the chance to ask questions ranging from training routines and matchday preparation to overcoming setbacks and staying motivated.

Goalkeeper Vickers, known for his resilience and leadership, spoke candidly about the importance of staying disciplined and trusting the process.

Fellow shot-stopper O'Donnell, who has a wealth of EFL experience to his name, discussed the importance of adaptability and continuous learning throughout his long career.

Ewes defender Shepherd shared her journey through the women's game, highlighting the growing opportunities and the importance of representation.

Fellow defender Sparkes inspired students with her commitment to development and her passion for the sport, encouraging young players to embrace every opportunity.

The visit reinforced the core values of our Football and Education programme dedication, discipline, and personal growth. By hearing directly from professionals, students gained a deeper understanding of the professional game.
