ACADEMY NEWS: Rio Canoville Makes Matlock Town Loan Move

Derby County Academy defender Rio Canoville has joined Matlock Town on a one-month youth loan.

The 17-year-old will be with the Gladiators for their next five matches, beginning with Saturday’s trip to Redcar Athletic.

Canoville - who signed his first professional contract with the club in December - has featured regularly across Under-18 and Under-21 football this season, captaining Bradley Johnson’s side in their FA Youth Cup tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford last month.

The highly rated centre-half also made the First Team substitutes’ bench for Derby’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Ipswich Town at Pride Park Stadium last weekend.

Commenting on the temporary move, Interim Academy Manager Jamie Smith said: “We are pleased that Rio will have the chance to experience his second loan spell in senior football.

“This opportunity will provide him with another key learning opportunity, contributing to a club who are actively competing in a title challenge and playing in front of strong home attendances. We look forward to watching Rio progress further across the next month.”

The agreement will allow Canoville to continue his weekly programme at Moor Farm Training Centre with Derby’s Academy staff, ensuring the teenager maintains full alignment with his Individual Development Plan for both Under-21 and First Team activity.

The Gladiators currently sit second in the Northern Premier League East Division ahead of this weekend’s trip to table-toppers Redcar Athletic
