Tom Lawrence turned from provider to scorer as Derby County fought back to earn a 2-2 draw against Southampton in the Third Round of the FA Cup.

The Rams will now face a trip to the South Coast for the replay and a chance to move on to the Fourth Round.

Nathan Redmond was the main threat for Southampton with his strike in the opening minutes deflected into the net before firing again to open the second-half. The Rams once again showed their desire to never give up and fought back for the draw.

Lawrence lifted the ball over to Jack Marriott to fire in, before the wideman wonderfully struck the equaliser.

Frank Lampard fielded a Starting XI which included three Derby County Academy products. Joining regular starter, Jayden Bogle, was 21-year-old Max Lowe in his first appearance back from his loan with Aberdeen and 18-year-old Max Bird.

The visitors took the lead after four minutes When Redmond’s low strike from the left of the box was deflected into the bottom corner.

The Rams responded well, and the Saints failed to produce much more up front for the remainder of the half.

Duane Holmes was impressive down the right for the Rams and linked up well with Marriott twice but was denied the equaliser. After half an hour, Marriott was played through and, under-pressure, found Holmes to the right. He fired from close range after being forced out wide but Angus Gunn was there to make the save at the near post.

Ten minutes later, Marriott played the ball back to Holmes who’s low strike glanced wide.

It was Redmond again to start the second-half strong for Southampton. Three minutes in, he rifled a shot from outside the area into the top right corner to double their lead.

The Rams pulled one back 10 minutes later through a brilliant bit of skill from Lawrence and a clinical finish from Marriott to take his goal tally on the season to double figures. After working his way into the right of the box, the Welshman flicked the ball over his marker to Marriott who struck on his first touch past Gunn.

Five minutes later and provider turned scorer and it was a sensational strike by Lawrence to even the score.

Kelle Roos made a brilliant save 15 minutes from the end to keep the score even. Mohamed Elyounoussi got his head on the end of a cross from the right, right in front of the goal but it was straight in the Rams’ ‘keeper’s hands.

In the final minutes, Roos made another important save from close range at one end before the Rams went straight down the other for Martyn Waghorn to drive a low shot from the edge of the box to call Gunn into action.

Marriott had a chance to seal the victory in the final few seconds of added time when David Nugent fed to him in the box, but the forward shot over.
