Pride Park Stadium
An action-packed clash in Derby County's first home game of the 2025/26 Sky Bet Championship season saw Coventry City come out on top in a 5-3 defeat on Saturday afternoon.

The first half saw a back-and-forth contest at Pride Park Stadium, with both sides looking dangerous on the ball.
An eighth-minute header saw Bobby Thomas put Coventry in front against the run of play after a spell of Derby pressure, but a fantastic free kick by defender Callum Elder levelled the matc just four minutes later.
Haji Wright put the Sky Blues back in front, though, as Frank Lampard’s side were awarded a penalty in the 24th minute that he converted.
Then, in the 45th minute, Derby were awarded a spo- kick for handball to cap off a lively half of football and striker Carlton Morris stepped up and scored his second Derby goal.
Derby had the lead early in the second half when a long throw bounced onto the right foot of captain Ebou Adams, who rolled the ball low and into the back of the net.
But three goals in 15 minutes from Coventry’s Brandon Thomas-Asante, Ephron Mason-Clarke and Victor Torp restored Coventry’s lead and gave them a two-goal cushion to make it 5-3.

A teasing cross from deep by Elder invited Morris to meet the ball with a diving header early -on as Derby started brightly. The striker - who scored his first goal for the Rams on opening day last weekend at Stoke City - headed just wide of the post.
Despite Derby’s early dominance, the visitors had the lead when Thomas-Asante’s free kick was steered beyond an onrushing Jacob Widell Zetterström by Thomas in the eighth minute.
The Rams looked for a fast response, and Morris nearly provided it a minute after the goal, when Elder’s corner delivery to the back post just evaded the striker.

The goal did come for Derby in the 12th minute, with Elder the unlikely source as he netted his first goal for the club in spectacular style by whipping a left-footed free kick from a tight angle on the right flank and into the top corner.
The visitors were handed a penalty in the 23rd minute, with Mason-Clarke judged to have been felled inside the penalty area by Dion Sanderson. Wright confidently hammered the penalty into the net restore Coventry's lead.
Liam Thompson’s attempted free-kick from the edge of the box bent just over the crossbar, with the Rams pushing for a second equaliser.
Derby’s pressure continued as Ryan Nyambe forced a strong save from Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth with a low strike from 20 yards away in the 38th minute.
The Rams were awarded a penalty for handball in the final minute of the first period, with Thomas receiving a yellow card. Morris stepped up to take from the spot and confidently dispatched the ball into the net to make it 2-2 at the break.
The game continued to be action-packed out of the gate in the second period, with Adams putting Derby ahead in the 50th minute to make it 3-2 in front of the South Stand.
Strong defensive instincts from Danny Batth denied the visitors a chance in the 60th minute, and a well-timed sliding tackle denied Thomas-Asante inside the area.

The corner that resulted from the chance also required action as Zetterström saved Victor Torp’s long-range effort.
Coventry evened things up once more after 70 minutes, as Thomas-Asante had the ball in the back of Derby’s net from close range following a long throw by Milan van Ewijk.
Mason-Clarke then swiftly followed it up with a header at the back post to restore to Sky Blues’ lead, and Torp struck from distance in the 79th minute to extend the visitors’ advantage.
Derby rang the changes as they chased the game late on, with
Andi Weimann, Joe Ward, Bobby Clark, Kenzo Goudmijn and Dajaune Brown coming on in the final
ten minutes of regulation time.
Te hosts held onto their lead to see out the final
stages of the eight-goal game and claim the points.
