Youngsters taste defeat once again at Moor Farm.
Derby County’s Under 18s signed off for a two-week break without a fixture still searching for their first win of the season in the U18 PDL 2 North, after a 2-0 home defeat to Birmingham City.
Reece Hales fired home the opening goal of the game on the quarter hour mark for the Blues at Moor Farm, before Deqwon Ebanks sealed the victory with a 67th minute strike.
Derby had few clear-cut opportunities in the game as they huffed and puffed without blowing the Birmingham house down.
It proved to be a disappointed afternoon, with the biggest positive to come out of the game the return to fitness of Republic of Ireland youth international Dylan Hayes after a long-term ankle injury.
Academy Manager Darren Wassall said: “It was another performance where we are yet to hit the heights of last season.
“We saw what we expect from the players in dribs and drabs and although we fought hard and battled, we didn’t show enough quality where it mattered.
“The gap in quality between the two sides wasn’t great, but we’re experiencing the harsh nature of being on the wrong side of the line at the moment is hard to take.
“For some reason it’s not happening for us at the moment and we hope that once we get that first win we’ll see a lift in confidence from the players.”
The Under 18s will return to action on 20th October with a home game against Sheffield United.
