Though the opportunity to reach the Championship’s play-off places is out of reach, Scott Carson believes that every one of Derby County’s last three fixtures carry a great deal of significance.
Gary Rowett’s side have just three games of the 2016/17 campaign remaining, beginning with a trip to Hillsborough to face in-form and play-off chasing Sheffield Wednesday, kick-off: 3pm.And as the season approaches it’s finale, Carson believes that each fixture is vitally important to the Derby squad, because ultimately everyone is playing for their future ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.
Carson told RamsTV: “We’re professional players, the last three games will be like every other game of football. You always want to win and you always want to go out and give your best.
“We know it’s been a disappointing season on our part and we’ve all contributed to the things that have happened in the season.
“I think it is only right to the club and to the supporters that we put in performances and try to finish the season strongly in the hope that we can carry that on into next year.”
He added: "All the players here are playing for their futures with the new manager coming in. He’s obviously got his own ideas and he’s going to have a look at everyone.
“I think people know that they can’t come off their game. In terms of the league, there is nothing to play for now but players are playing for their future and to stay here at Derby.”
It has been a long season full of both twists and turns, and as the competition for a place in the play-offs continues to hot up – it looks as if the Rams are set for yet another tough test against another promotion chasing side, following a 1-1 draw against third placed Huddersfield Town on Monday.
On the back of a four-game win streak, Carlos Carvalhal’s side enter the game in hot form and are one of the division’s most in-form teams.
This comes as no surprise to Carson though, who believes the Owls were very unfortunate not give gain promotion to the Premier League last season after a 1-0 play-off final loss to Hull City.
On Sheffield Wednesday, the 31-year-old explained: “They’ve done very well.
“They were unlucky last year not to get into the Premier League, but to sustain the momentum and get up there again is a credit to them and especially the manager, who seems to have them playing well week in, week out.
“We’re going to be in for a tough game because they need the win. I think that’s another incentive for us to do well because we know that they’re going to be right up for it and if there is any doubt that we’re not going to be then it could be Brentford (4-0 defeat) all over again.”
