‘Wolves Win Was A Flavour Of What Is To Come’ Says Carson

Scott Carson says Derby County’s win over Wolves in April was a taster for what life could be like for the club on a far more regular basis under Gary Rowett.

The 3-1 victory, in the Rams’ final home game of the 2016/17 season, was arguably the most complete performance under the manager after he took charge in the middle of March.

There were other impressive displays along the way, including the 4-2 win over Fulham and the second half showing in the 2-2 draw with local rivals Nottingham Forest, but for Carson, the Wolves performance particularly stood out.

After predominantly being a possession-based side for the last four years, Derby have deployed a more direct style of play under Rowett.

And on that day against Wolves, Carson feels everyone saw the shoots of how the Rams did, and will, benefit from that.

Derby’s Player of the Year told RamsTV: “There were times in the past season where we were having a lot of possession and we were facing teams, particularly at home, that were just sitting behind the ball.

“We found it difficult to break teams down so if we have got more styles of play, I’m sure that will really benefit us.

“We saw a far more positive performance against Wolves before the season ended and that, for me, was an indicator that we have got some good things to come.

“I keep talking about the Wolves game, but the manager has been drilling it into us that he doesn’t want us passing the ball around at the back.

“If we can get the ball forward and get into far more dangerous positions quicker then that’s what he wants. We mixed up really well in that Wolves game and it gave us another dimension.”
