How Did They Fare Last Year?

The Bristol Post best described Bristol City’s 2016/17 season as one of ‘treading water’

The Robins perfectly encapsulated what the Sky Bet Championship is all about. There were the highs and the lows in equal measure, but ultimately, there was something to build on.

In what was Lee Johnson’s first full season in charge at Ashton Gate – the statistics suggest City displayed improvement over the course of their second season back in the second tier.

They had a higher win ratio, more victories overall and a significantly better goal difference after the 46-game marathon.

The minuses within that was the losing run of 11 in 12 that left Bristol City teetering on the edge of relegation, which came after they had been on the cusp of the play-offs.

They did finish strongly over the last 10 games – the third best in the Championship – and that offers a great deal of encouragement going into the 2017/18 campaign.

That will, largely, depend on what Johnson does to fill the big void left by Tammy Abraham.

The young Chelsea forward swooped into Ashton Gate and took up the baton left by Jonathan Kodjia after he left to join Aston Villa.

Abraham topped the scoring charts with 26 for Bristol City in all competitions and has now linked up with Swansea City to further his education in the Premier League.

Replacing him, as well as Lee Tomlin, is the biggest task facing the club if they are to improve on their 18th finish last term.
