Andi Weimann hopes that he can stay in contention for a starting place after he played a starring role in Derby County’s comfortable 2-0 victory against Queens Park Rangers.

The winger put in a vibrant performance and played a part in both goals as Matej Vydra and Tom Lawrence secured the three points.

It was Weimann’s first start since late September against Birmingham City, and the Austrian hopes that he can keep his place in the starting XI for the upcoming games.

He told RamsTV: “I’m happy with the two assists, I would have liked to get a goal as well but I was just happy to start and hopefully I’ve shown the manager that I can stay in the team.

“It’s been frustrating, I’ve been out of the team for quite a while, but I was ready tonight and I’ve tried to show my best so that I can continue to start games.”

The Rams found it difficult in the first half as QPR sat in their defensive shape, and Weimann says that Vydra’s ninth goal of the season just shy of the break was crucial in shaping the outcome of the second period.

He said: “It was frustrating, they sat in and maybe we tried to force it too much, but I saw Tom (Huddlestone) get the ball and suddenly all of their defenders were gone.

“I ran back into my own half to make sure that I was onside, then I looked up and I saw Vyds (Matej Vydra) in the middle, I was at a bit of an angle so I got it across and he just had to tap it in.

“They couldn’t just sit in any more, they had to come out and it was a bit easier for me, Vyds, Tom (Lawrence) and David Nugent to make those runs in behind.”

On his 16th appearance for the club, Lawrence found the net and his wing partner on the night is sure that there are many more to come.

He added: “It was a great pass from Curtis (Davies), I didn’t take the best of touches but Tom finished it off well.

“He’s been doing it in training, it just hasn’t happened for him in a game.

“Obviously he’s really happy to get his first goal for Derby and hopefully he can get many more now.”
