Manager Frank Lampard felt his side did enough to claim all three points against Brentford – but was left to rue key moments in the game going against the Rams in the 3-3 draw.
Harry Wilson scored twice, once in either half, while Jayden Bogle was also on the scoresheet as Derby took the lead three times in the game.
Ashley Cole appeared to be tripped inside the penalty area early in the second half, however, the referee booked the full back for diving.
It was a decision that Lampard felt was the wrong one.
That decision aside, the manager felt his side did more than enough to win the game but were left to rue the fact they did not kill the game off when other opportuinites came their way.
“We deserved to win the game,” he told RamsTV. “It was a very tough game against a good team. We had good chances and hit the post and at 3-2 we had a really good chance to kill the game.
“We had the most obvious penalty that you will see all season, and we’ve had a couple of those already this season which is really frustrating because it means points.
“Ashley said to the referee ‘if you are going to book me, you are going to make a mistake because it was a clear penalty’.
“Their players' reactions tell the whole story. He clipped his legs clearly and I can’t believe he hasn’t given it. The referee knows he has made a mistake. If he looks back at it, it is clear as day.
“I thought the lads deserved a result today. I thought the crowd that came down here today from Derby was fantastic, the players reacted to that and played really well against a very good team so the frustration is we should have won the game.
“The frustration is that we gave the lead away, but we are looking like we are going to score goals at the moment and that is good. We had a patch where we struggled but now we look like a threat with our attacking players getting in behind.
“We were ahead three times, but Brentford will create at home and Griffin Park is a tough place to come to. They do create chances and have talented players so you accept that. We made mistakes for some of their goals but I thought we were the better team.”
Two goals from Wilson took his goal tally to 14 for the season in all competitions.
“They were great finishes,” the manager said. “The first was very clinical and I was right behind the second. It was a really good run, the pass from Fikayo Tomori was good, Harry’s first touch is class to set him up for a really good finish.”
There was also a first goal in professional football for Academy graduate Bogle in the game.
“It was well deserved,” admitted Lampard. “He has been getting in great positions and has great feet and it was a classy finish so I’m pleased for him.”
It’s a quick turnaround now for the Rams as they face Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Tuesday night.
“We must be positive because there was a lot of good in that performance,” said the boss. “The league table where we were, we have made a bit of progress on a couple of teams and it’s not easy to come here.
“It’s not a given to get three points here so we must stay positive about the good things in today’s performance and we go on to Blackburn and try and win the game.
“You look at the results today and they are crazy. Teams you don’t expect to beat others beat them and you can’t expect things to go the way you expect them at the moment. Teams are fighting for different reasons so we have to keep fighting for ourselves.”
