Striker Jack Marriott believes the hard work put in during pre-season will reap its rewards when the Sky Bet Championship campaign kicks off in August.

Derby County's first-team players returned to the Training Centre this morning as preparations for the new 2019/20 campaign got underway.

The new season will kick off in just over a month's time, with the Rams' campaign kicking off with a trip to Huddersfield Town on Monday 5th August.

And Marriott, who is happy to be back amongst his team-mates, knows how important this time of year is.

“You work hard in pre-season for your rewards throughout the season,” he told RamsTV. “Let’s just put the hard work in and be ready.

“I think you have to switch off from football. It is your job for around ten months of the year, so you have got to be able to have your rest and try and completely switch off and get away.

“It is good to be back now. The weather has cooled down a little and it will be good to get back into the swing of things in the build up to the season.

“It is different to last season for me. It is a lot more settled to be here for the whole pre-season rather than just a week of it after I arrived from Peterborough.

“It was difficult last season, but it happens with transfers. It is nice to be here and be settled and not have to worry about anything else.

“We have got a good squad here. We had a good squad last year and have got a majority of the lads back in this pre-season. It is good to see everyone and hopefully we can kick-on now.”

Marriott scored 13 goals for Derby in the 2018/19 season from 43 appearances, including a brace in the Play-Off Semi-Final Second Leg against Leeds United and a strike in the Play-Off Final defeat to Aston Villa.
