Derby County’s Graeme Shinnie is in the running for the Sky Bet Championship’s ‘Goal of the Month’ award for October.

The midfielder netted his first goal for Derby, following his move from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen over the summer, in spectacular fashion in a dramatic 1-0 home win over Wigan Athletic.

Shinnie thundered a superb right-foot finish from just inside the penalty area into the back of the net deep into added time to hand Derby all three points against the Latics.

Duane Holmes’ cross into the box was perfectly laid off by Chris Martin and Shinnie lashed the ball into the top corner with a fine first-time strike.

The three-player shortlist for the Championship, announced by the EFL’s title sponsor Sky Bet this morning, sees Shinnie up against Hull City’s Tom Eaves and Tom Barkhuizen of Preston North End for the latest monthly accolade.

In describing Shinnie’s goal, Sky Bet stated: “Shinnie turned a disappointing evening into a glorious one with a 92nd minute winner. One swish of his right boot and perfect timing were all it took as the ball flashed into the net.”
