Smith Enjoys The Moment As Derby Leave It Late To Defeat Forest

Pictured here is former Derby County boss Jim Smith celebrating Horacio Carbonari’s dramatic late winner against Nottingham Forest at Pride Park Stadium in April 1999 - while the despair is also clear on the face of then Reds boss Ron Atkinson in the background.

The game looked set to end in a 0-0 draw – but Carbonari had other ideas and the Argentinian defender lashed home a superb solo goal five minutes from time to hand Derby a 1-0 win and all three points against their local rivals.

Both sides had a player sent off on the day, with goalkeeper Russell Hoult seeing red for the Rams while Forest defender Richard Gough was also dismissed.

Carbonari’s dramatic late goal was the perfect end to the first-ever local derby between the two sides at Pride Park, after Derby moved to their new home in the summer of 1997.

Derby went on to finish the 1998/99 season in eighth place in the top-flight, while Forest finished bottom of the table and were relegated.
