Phillip Cocu says Craig Forsyth has earned his new Derby County contract.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Forsyth, who is 31, has extended his time at Pride Park Stadium until the summer of 2022.

The defender made his 200th appearance for the club in last Saturday’s 3-2 victory at Millwall and is one of the Rams’ longest-serving players.

He originally joined Derby in March 2013, under the management of Nigel Clough, on loan from Watford and he sealed a permanent move a few months later.

Forsyth has, unfortunately, suffered three separate serious knee injuries in recent years but he has shown his resilience and mental strength to bounce back on each occasion.

Cocu, who was appointed as Derby’s manager last July, has been impressed with the Scotland international both on and off the pitch and is pleased the versatile defender has committed his future to the club.

Speaking to RamsTV, Cocu said: “Craig has had to deal with some serious injuries, which is a pity, but to play 200 games for the club is impressive.

“We are very happy that Craig has extended his contract.

“He knows what the club is all about and is a great asset to the team too.”

Forsyth, who can play in central defence as well as at left-back, has made 19 appearances in all competitions for Derby so far this season.
