Derby County’s Under-23s will hit the road for the first time in their 2021/22 Premier League 2 - Division 1 season on Monday evening when they travel across the East Midlands to take on Leicester City.

The Under-23s will face the Foxes at the King Power Stadium (7pm kick-off) and here’s a quick look at all you need to know ahead of the game.

Team News

Pat Lyons will certainly be without young winger Tyree Wilson after he suffered a knee injury in their 2-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion last week under the Pride Park Stadium floodlights.

Summer signings Luke Plange and Courtney Clarke were unavailable for the game against the Seagulls, but it is hoped they will be able to return to the fold, along with midfielder Connor Dixon.

A number of first-year professionals featured against Brighton, with the likes of Isaac Hutchinson and Jordan Brown currently with the first-team squad, so some members of Adam Robinson's Under-18s group could be in the matchday squad.

Pre-Match Views

Speaking to RamsTV, Senior Professional Development Phase Coach Pat Lyons said: "I thought we played well against Brighton; we started well and I think their experience was probably the difference.

"The first goal was always going to be important. We needed stay in the game, so to concede the second was a blow.

"It was disappointing to lose, but it was an important learning curve for so many of the players as many of them hadn't played too much Under-23s football and a few that came back from long-term injuries.

"What is important is we keep improving, keep putting performances in and there will be moments in games that go for us, and others that go in the opposite direction."

Last Time Out

Derby's Under-23s got their 2021/22 season started with a 2-0 home defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion last Monday.

Cam Peupion drove home the opening goal of the game after 65 minutes at Pride Park Stadium before a header from substitute Ewan Ferguson five minutes later put the game beyond Pat Lyons’ youthful side.

Brighton played out the latter stages with ten men after James Furlong was sent off for two bookable offences, but they managed to keep the Rams at bay to take all three points.

Leicester's Under-23s started their league campaign with a 2-2 draw at Manchester United last weekend. Jacob Wakeling and Kasey McAteer were on target for the Foxes' youngsters, who are managed by Ben Petty.
