Striker David McGoldrick believes the rebuild project being undertaken at Derby County was a huge motivation behind his move to Pride Park Stadium.

The 34-year-old, who has put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal, recently left Sky Bet Championship side Sheffield United where he spent the last four years, which included two seasons in the Premier League.

McGoldrick has enjoyed a successful career in the game to date, having amassed over 500 career appearances, and he believes in the project which is taking place at Derby following the successful takeover of the club by Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd.

The striker spoke to RamsTV after signing his contract and gave his reasons for joining the Rams.

On Joining Derby…

It’s a big pull. It’s a big club and I know a lot about the club. Speaking to Liam Rosenior and some of the players who are here, what they want to do and the ambition of where they want to get back to; it’s a massive project that I want to be a part of.

I’m a Nottingham boy so I know the history and I know the rivalry they have with Nottingham Forest, but Derby County is great club. I’m a Notts County fan myself but I know all about how much this is a big club and have watched many over the years such as Paulo Wanchope and Fabrizio Ravanelli and I know about all the great strikers that have been here already.

On The Players He Knows At The Club…

I know Richard Stearman very well. I’ve been with him at a few clubs and I know Craig Forsyth from being around as well. I’ve played against Curtis Davies many times and I’ve been speaking to Tom Lawrence as well recently, so they all had good things to say about the club. They didn’t need to say much about the club, it was more about the people here and Liam himself about how he works. It was all good things and it’s perfect for me.

On His First Impressions Of The Club…

It’s a massive club. Everyone knows that with the manager and players that they have had in recent history, especially the years that I’ve been playing against them in the Championship. What stuck out for me last year was when I was at Sheffield United and we lost 2-0; the place was rocking. To say where Derby were in the table and the stuff that was going off, I couldn’t believe it. It was probably the best atmosphere that we faced last year. Tom Lawrence scored two worldie goals and the place was rocking so if we can get anything like that this season then it’s going to be a force.

On His Time At Sheffield United…

I had four very good years there. I enjoyed my time at Sheffield United and got welcomed there with open arms. I took it in my stride and I’ve got nothing but fond memories looking back. It was a great ride that we went on and I’m hoping that we will have a good ride here as well.

On Still Having A Lot To Offer…

I’ve never been blistering quick, that has never been part of my game, but I don’t think you ever lose it in your brain and that’s the main thing. I still feel as hungry and ambitious as ever and I know I can still play at the top level, but this is a big pull for me. There were other offers which were probably more lucrative but I just felt this was right. I’m local as well so it’s good for me and my family and the whole project of the club and what the players have said about it, it’s just perfect for me.
