ACADEMY NEWS: Cox Makes League Two Loan Switch

Derby County Academy defender Daniel Cox will join Sky Bet League Two side Walsall on a season-long loan ahead of the start of the 2025/26 season next month.

The Wales youth international will join the Saddlers, who narrowly missed out on promotion as they reached the Play-Off Final last season before tasting defeat to AFC Wimbledon, under the tutelage of Head Coach Mat Sadler in the fourth tier.

Cox, a left-footed centre-back, has risen through the ranks of the Rams' Academy. He played for the Under-18s when still at Under-16 level in 2022/23 and then continued his progress by playing for the Under-18s for a season before permanently joining the Under-21s set up ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

In the 2024/25 season, he made 10 appearances across Premier League 2 and the Premier League Cup for the Rams’ Under-21s and also gained valuable senior football experience as he featured nine times for National League South side Enfield Town while on a short-term loan.

Cox has one first-team appearance to his name for Derby, which saw him come off the bench for 23 minutes in a 4-1 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-21s in the EFL Trophy back in November 2023.

Cox has represented Wales through the age groups on over 20 occasions, including 14 matches with the Under-19s.

The 19-year-old has also frequently worn the captain's armband for the Cymru Under-19s, leading Head Coach Chris Gunter’s side out five times last season.
