TRANSFER NEWS: Scotland international Max Johnston signs for Derby County

Derby County have completed the signing of Scotland international defender Max Johnston.

The 21-year-old arrives at Pride Park Stadium from Austrian side Sturm Graz for an undisclosed fee on a four-year contract.

Johnston – who operates primarily at right-back – is Derby’s 12th signing of the summer and he returns to British football with two Austrian Bundesliga titles, one Austrian Cup and significant European and international experience under his belt.

He also featured in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League during his time in Austria, where he made over 60 appearances across two seasons after joining Sturm Graz from his boyhood club Motherwell in July 2023.

The defender made his senior international debut against Greece in March and he has been named in Steve Clarke’s latest squad for Scotland’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.

Welcome to Derby, Max!
