WOMEN’S MATCH PREVIEW: Coventry Sphinx Ladies (A)

Derby County Women will look to book their place in the Second Round of the 2025/26 Adobe Women's FA Cup as they travel to Coventry Sphinx Ladies on Sunday (2pm kick-off).

The Ewes’ FA Cup campaign begins tomorrow as the First Round Proper of the competition will commence, while their opponents made it to this stage after progressing through the qualifying stages.

Head Coach Sam Griffiths’ side went unbeaten in September, but has one draw from three matches this month, with a 1-1 draw away to Hull City in the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division, followed up by an action-packed, narrow 3-2 defeat against Real Bedford last Sunday.

The loss to Bedford on the road saw Derby eliminated from the FA Women’s National League Cup in the First Round, after coming top of the pack in their group stage fixtures.

Griffiths sees Sunday’s FA Cup outing as a chance to gain winning momentum: “We need to go there and win,” she said.

“We pride ourselves on the FA Cup; it is a competition that means so much to this group and we know how much it means to the club.”

The Opposition

Coventry Sphinx Ladies have started the season unbeaten in their league, West Midlands Regional Women's Premier Division (Tier 5), picking up nine points and scoring eight goals in three games - seeing them fifth in the table.

Kirsty Farnsworth and Brooke Hornsby lead their goalscoring charts with two goals.

Sphinx got into the next round of the FA Cup the hard way, as they got through via a penalty shootout against Ashfordby Amateurs Ladies in the Third Round Qualifying last weekend.

It was at the second attempt, too, having beaten them 5-1 a fortnight earlier as the game was forced to be replayed after Coventry were judged to have made an ineligible substitution in the first match-up.

A place in the hat for the next round awaits at the Cameron Slater Arena on Sunday afternoon.
