MATCH PREVIEW: Hull City (H)

Derby County are back at Pride Park Stadium on Tuesday evening when they take on Hull City in their latest Sky Bet Championship fixture (7:45pm kick-off).

John Eustace’s side will head into the contest with the Tigers in good form after claiming three successive victories in the second tier in the last two weeks.

The recent 1-0 home wins over Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers were backed up by an emphatic 3-1 triumph against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday, with striker Carlton Morris bagging his first-ever career hat-trick against the Blades.

The visit of Hull, who are unbeaten in six matches and won four of those matches, will present another intriguing Championship clash for the Rams in the middle of another challenging three-game week.

Ticket Information

Tickets for the Rams' latest home game are still available and can be purchased online, over the phone or in person from the Ticket Office.

Supporters are urged to buy tickets in advance to avoid the matchday price increase.

Remembrance Fixture

Tuesday night's match will be the club’s dedicated Remembrance fixture.

The game is Derby’s closest home fixture to Remembrance Sunday, which falls on 9th November in 2025, which is then followed by Remembrance Day on Tuesday 11th November.

Ahead of kick-off against Hull, wreaths will be laid on the pitch by representatives from both clubs and those in attendance will be asked to observe the playing of the Last Post before a period of silence.

Supporters are encouraged to arrive at their seats as early as possible, for 7:30pm, in order to pay their respects before the fixture gets underway.

A small service will also be held by Club Chaplain Tony Luke at around 5:15pm at the War Memorial Plaque outside the Lionel Pickering Entrance, with all supporters welcome to attend.

The service will include a two-minute silence to show respect and gratitude to the armed forces both past and present who have sadly lost their lives fighting for their country.

A collection will also be conducted for supporters who wish to make a donation to the Royal British Legion.

Derby’s playing and coaching staff will all wear a poppy for the fixture against Hull, while the Rams' match shirts from the game will be auctioned off by MatchWornShirt, who are partnered with the club and other teams across the globe, to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.

The Opposition

With an EFL transfer restriction and a lengthy injury list to contend with, Hull City have defied the odds with their start to the 2025/26 campaign.

It was in July that the EFL announced that they had placed a fee-restricting embargo on the Humberside club that meant the Tigers were unable to sign any player, either permanently or on loan, that involved a transfer fee. Initially the restriction was set for three transfer windows, but that was reduced to two on appeal.

It still means that Hull cannot pay fees for players until next summer, and it cost them the two deals they thought they had wrapped up in early summer with moves for midfielders Reda Laalaoui and Gustavo Puerta collapsing as the EFL would not sanction their registrations.

It meant a rapid change of tack for the club as they looked to rebuild their squad for new head coach Sergej Jakirović. By the time the summer transfer window had closed, the Tigers had managed to recruit 21 players – though not all for the first team – with 25 players leaving. According to transfer tracking website transfermarkt.co.uk, that represents the most player movements of any Championship club last summer.

Bosnian Jakirović is the club’s third permanent head coach since Liam Rosenior left in May 2024. The former Rams interim manager had taken the Tigers to seventh in the Championship during the 2023/24 season.

Owner Acun Ilicali, who has been in charge at Hull almost four years, appointed Tim Walter to replace Rosenior, but the German lasted only 18 games. Rubén Sellés was named head coach in December last year, but he too departed at the end of last season. The Spaniard, who is now at Real Zaragoza after another brief stint at Sheffield United, did keep Hull in the Championship last term, though it was achieved on goal difference. A draw at Portsmouth on the last day, coupled with Luton’s Town’s defeat at West Bromwich Albion, meant Hull leapfrogged the Hatters to survive.

This season the Tigers’ form started slowly with only one win in their opening five league games but, after Saturday’s 2-0 win at Norwich City, they have lost only once in nine Championship games. At the start of October, Hull won three games on the bounce with home victories over Sheffield United and Leicester City sandwiched around a win at Birmingham City. It would have been four consecutive successes but for Charlie Kelman’s 94th minute equaliser for Charlton Athletic at the MKM Stadium ten days ago.

What’s more, the run of good results has been achieved despite a crippling injury list with as many as eight first teamers on the sidelines in recent weeks, including top scorer Oli McBurnie. The former Sheffield United frontman, who was named EFL Player of the Month for September, has been out with a calf problem.

Club Links

There have been several players to have represented both Derby County and Hull City down the years.

There are few more popular than centre-back Curtis Davies, who played 175 times and scored for Derby between 2017 and 2023.

The well-liked central defender was coming towards the end of his career when he joined Derby from Hull in June 2017, having played 144 games for the Tigers, but the then 32-year-old still managed to put in some magnificent performances for the Rams during difficult times.

He was an ever-present in his first season, but injuries held him back in 2018/19 and, when he returned to fitness, the club’s off-the-field issues were coming to the fore. After administration and the points deductions, Davies played in every minute of the 2021/22 campaign and won the Jack Stamps Player of the Season Award that term.

Before his six seasons at Pride Park, Davies played four campaigns with Hull, three of them in the Premier League. He was a member of the Tigers’ FA Cup Final side in 2 014, scoring to put his side 2-0 up at Wembley only for Arsenal to hit back and take the trophy after extra-time.

Earlier in his career he turned out for all three Birmingham based clubs - West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Birmingham City - as well as Luton Town and, after leaving Derby, he had a season with Cheltenham Town before retiring in the summer of 2024.

One of the reasons that Fikayo Tomori was brought to Derby on loan from Chelsea during the 2018/19 season was the injury sustained by Curtis Davies - but what a signing he proved to be.

Then only 20-years-old, the Canadian-born defender had spent the previous season on loan at Hull City, playing in 26 times for the Tigers, and quickly got into his stride at Pride Park. He formed an effective centre-back partnership with Richard Keogh with his pace and excellent tackling major contributions towards Derby’s surge to the 2019 Play-Off Final. He played 55 times in total during the season, scoring twice.

Aston Villa got the better of the day at Wembley and Tomori returned to Chelsea as Derby’s Player of the Year, where Frank Lampard, who had brought him to the Rams, quickly promoted him to the first team.

He won the first of his five senior England caps while with the Blues but moved on to AC Milan, initially on loan before completing a £25 Million permanent transfer, and he is now closing in on 200 appearances for the Italian club that he helped to the Serie A title in 2021/22.

Head Coach John Eustace spoke to RamsTV on Monday afternoon to preview the clash with the Tigers.
