Derby County completed the signing of Ben Brereton Diaz on a season-long loan from Southampton in August 2025.
He arrived as the Rams’ 13th and final signing of the summer transfer window.
The move for the Chile international - who can play across the forward line - added further Championship experience and a proven goalscoring option to the Derby squad.
He arrived at Derby having scored seven goals in 35 games for his nation, who he first represented in 2021.
In total, Brereton Diaz checked in at Derby having scored over 70 goals across more than 300 senior appearances, including a season-best of 22 during the 2021/22 campaign, when he was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.
Born in Stoke-on-Trent, Brereton Diaz began his professional career with Nottingham Forest after spells with Manchester United and Stoke City at youth level.
He made his senior debut in 2017 and his efforts were rewarded with the 2016/17 EFL Apprentice of the Year award.
Brereton Diaz went on to appear 57 times for the City Ground club in all competitions, scoring nine goals.
After spending the first half of the 2018/19 season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, he made the move permanent in January 2019 and went on to spend five years at Ewood Park.
He exploded into goalscoring form during the 2021/22 campaign, scoring 22 times in all competitions with his performances seeing him named as Blackburn’s Players’ Player of the Year, as well as earning a spot in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.
The forward scored 16 goals the following campaign and at the end of the season, he made the move to La Liga side Villarreal.
He returned to English football in January 2024 with Sheffield United to experience the Premier League for the first time, and he impressed with six goals in his 16 appearances for the Blades.
A permanent move to the top flight with Southampton followed, before he returned to Bramall Lane on another loan deal for the second half of the 2024/25 season, when he scored four times as they reached the Championship play-off final.
At international level, Brereton Diaz top-scored as England won the 2017 UEFA European Under-19 Championship under the management of Derby First Team Coach Keith Downing.
He was selected for the senior Chile squad – qualifying through his mother - for the first time in 2021 and he has gone on to make 35 international appearances, scoring seven goals, while he has represented his nation at two Copa América tournaments.
