Turf Moor
Derby County’s Carabao Cup campaign concluded in Round Two after a late goal secured victory for Premier League Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.

Aaron Ramsey’s goal gave the Premier League side the advantage after four minutes, but Derby held control of much of the first period and their reward came when Bobby Clark netted his first goal for the club in the 34th minute to round off a flowing move.
After a competitively contested second half and a spirited performance from Derby, neither side could find an clear opening until Oliver Sonne struck for the hosts in added time to secure a 2-1 win.

After the Rams put together a spell of possession in the first knockings of the game, Callum Elder fizzed a low cross into the third minute that just evaded the onrushing Rhian Brewster and Kayden Jackson inside the penalty area.
Burnley took the lead with a fast attack in the fourth minute as Loum Tchaouna fed a pass through to Ramsey in the box and he tucked the ball beyond goalkeeper Josh Vickers.
Craig Forsyth made an important defensive intervention in the 23rd minute when Tchaouna’s cross into the box looked to drop for a Burnley striker, but he headed away the danger.

A neat move from the Rams saw Brewster in position to head towards goal in the 27th minute, as Elder crossed the ball into him - but strong defending saw the ball out for a corner, which was again dealt with well by the Clarets’ defence.
Clark surged into the box in the 34th minute as he dribbled beyond his marker on the left flank and was knocked off the ball by a Burnley defender, but his penalty appeals were waved away.
His moment came soon after, though, as he latched onto Elder’s low delivery into the box after a sharp attacking move and skipped around a defender to finish calmly beyond the goalkeeper for his first Derby goal.

Vickers made a vital save to keep the score level at 1-1 as the Clarets pushed for a quick response to being pegged back. A cross from the left found Zian Flemming in space to head goalwards the far post, but the Rams’ shot-stopper dived to deny the striker.
The teams went into half-time with the scoreline at 1-1, and John Eustace made Derby’s first change at the break by bringing Matt Clarke on to replace Elder.
Adams tried a shot from the edge of the box moments after the restart for Derby, but the captain’s strike dragged low and was easily collected by goalkeeper Max Weiß.

The game settled with the hosts having control, and Joe Worrall came near for the hosts in the 52nd minute when he met Sonne’s cross from the right flank with an inventive flick, but the defender just saw his effort sail over the crossbar.
Burnley came close to taking the lead in the 58th minute after Flemming smashed a free-kick into the wall, and the rebound found Tchaouna, whose low shot struck the post.
Tenacious running from Derby attacker Jackson saw him threaded into a
shooting position by Brewster in the 59th minute, but he was well marshalled by
Axel Tuanzebe, who steered his effort from a tight angle out for
a corner.

Andi Weimann, Dajaune Brown and Liam Thompson added fresh legs
to the Rams’ ranks in the 62nd minute with Brewster, Clark and Osborn making
way.
Kane Wilson also entered the field to make his first appearance of the season in the 70th minute as he replaced Joe Ward.
Clarets substitute Jaydon Banel forced a save from Vickers with a speculative strike in the 82nd minute, with neither side quite able to fashion a clear-cut chance.
A minute later, Forsyth played an enticing ball into the box after Derby won a deep free-kick. His ball in found the head of Clarke, but the centre-back couldn’t steer the ball on target
However, with penalties looming,;Sonne netted late on when he was slid in behind Derby’s
defence and he slotted a calm finish beyond Vickers to put Burnley into Round Three.
Despite the defeat, there were plenty of encouraging signs on display for Derby to build on against a Premier League ouft.
