Derby keep up pressure on leaders Wolves
Derby County took advantage of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ goalless draw with Sunderland to close the gap at the top of the Championship after winning 3-0 at Barnsley.
Reuters.co.uk wrote: “Derby manager Gary Rowett was delighted at his side’s performance. “We’ve had a little bit of criticism at times for not playing as fluidly as we want. There were some real moments of quality,” he said.
“This week marks a year since Rowett was sacked by Birmingham City, even though the Blues were seventh in the table. Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Fulham means Birmingham, for whom Jeremie Boga missed a penalty, remain deep in relegation trouble in 22nd place.”
16-Year-Old Irish Midfielder Stuns Man City U18s With Missile For Derby County
Jason Knight made himself a young Irish player to put in the notebook on Saturday. The 16-year-old scored twice as Derby County U18s beat their Man City counterparts 2-0.
PJ Brown for Balls.IE reported: “Knight opened the scoring after just five minutes. It was a sensational, missile-like strike from the young midfielder which Pawel Sokol in the City goal could not stop.
“Just five minutes later, Knight would double his and his team's tally for the game. This one came when he reacted quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area.”
Comfortable Rams Brush Barnsley Aside
Derby sealed a comfortable 3-0 win away at Barnsley as goals from Tom Lawrence, Matej Vydra and Andreas Weimann kept them in the hunt for promotion.
Sky Sports Reported: “The majority of the opening exchanges at Oakwell were quiet and it took Derby 39 minutes to open the scoring. Weimann's cross was not dealt with and Lawrence was able to pounce on a loose ball to fire past Adam Davies.
“It was not long before the Rams found themselves two goals ahead. Weimann was again the supplier as he pulled the ball back into the path of Vydra who found the net from close range after 44 minutes.”
