Frank Lampard says being handed a Carabao Cup Third Round tie at Manchester United is an exciting prospect for Derby County’s players.

After impressively defeating fellow Sky Bet Championship side Hull City 4-0 at the KCOM Stadium in midweek, Derby were handed a trip to Old Trafford in Thursday evening’s draw.

Lampard believes testing themselves against one of the Premier League’s heavyweights should be viewed as an exciting challenge for his squad.

The tie will also see the Derby boss come up against Jose Mourinho in the opposition dug-out and Lampard is looking forward to renewing acquaintances with his old Chelsea boss.

Speaking to dcfc.co.uk, Lampard said: “It’s a brilliant draw and it’ll be a really good test for our players.

“Going to Old Trafford and coming up against a top team and world class players will be great for us.

“On a personal note, to go up against a manager that I respect so highly and worked with is obviously a huge thing for me.

“It’s something for us to look forward to as a club and I have no doubt we’ll have fantastic support travelling up to the game. Everything that the tie brings is interesting and very positive for Derby County.

“We should all see it as a great challenge to go to Manchester United and give a good account of ourselves.”

Derby’s visit to Old Trafford will take place on the week commencing Monday 24th September.

Lampard insists the Rams must focus on their league campaign and put thoughts of the mouthwatering tie to one side for the time being.

He said: “Obviously the game is a month or so away and in the meantime we have the league to focus on.

“The Championship is our bread and butter and we’ll continue to work as hard as we can to get the results we want.

“This sort of tie will be a good test for us to see where we’re at.”
