It was a day to remember for young midfielder Luke Thomas as he netted his first professional goal and put in a man of the match display as his Coventry City side beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1.

Thomas, who played the full 90 minutes, made it 2-0 to the Sky Blues just before half time as he lashed an effort from 20 yards into the corner.

The 19-year-old was a threat throughout and secured his side’s fifth win in a row which moved them up to seventh in Sky Bet League One.

Following the game, Thomas said: “It was about time that I got my first goal, I’ve had to wait about 11 or 12 games for it.

“I’ve had a lot of shots, but I need to do better and work the goalkeeper more which I’ve been working in training and thankfully it has paid off today.

“Doyle’s put the ball into the box and someone’s kicked it away and I’ve taken a first touch and I thought if I can get this back on my left I’m going to shoot.

“As soon as I hit it I knew it was a good strike. Luckily for me it’s gone in off the post and it felt amazing. The next thing I know I’m off celebrating!”

Another man who was celebrating this weekend was full back Max Lowe as he played a key role in their 1-0 victory over Rangers at Hampden Park which secured their place in the final of the Scottish League Cup.

Lowe came on as a 36th minute substitute and was instrumental both in his attacking and defending roles as Aberdeen secured their place in the final of the competition to set up a clash against Celtic.

The only other players in action for their loan clubs this weekend was defender Ethan Wassall and goalkeeper Matt Yates as both played the full 90 minutes in their 3-1 defeat against Boston United.

Chris Martin (Hull City), Timi Elsnik (Mansfield Town), Kellen Gordon (Lincoln City) and Alex Babos (Real Union) were all unused substitutes for their loan sides this weekend, whilst Jonathan Mitchell (Oxford United) and Nick Blackman (Sporting Gijon) did not feature.
