Mason Bennett’s audacious overhead kick against Wigan Athletic has been nominated for the Sky Bet Championship 'Goal of the Month' for March.

The winger had not been on the field long when he showed incredible technique to meet a cross from left-back Scott Malone and find the corner with an acrobatic effort from a ridiculous angle.

It was a pivotal goal as it inspired the Rams to a 2-1 victory over Paul Cook’s Latics side and started a run of five games unbeaten.

Speaking at the time, Bennett said: “It was just instinct and improvisation.

“I thought, with the ball behind me, as long as I can get a good connection and hit it on target then anything can happen. Luckily it went in.

“It was a bit unorthodox because normally people would go with their right foot, but that was the one that was closest, and it just felt more natural for me.”

Bennett’s goal is one of three to be nominated. Jack Grealish’s volley against the Rams at the start of March is a contender whilst Norwich’s Emiliano Buendia is up for the award for his strike against Swansea City.
