Phillip Cocu says Derby County’s trip to Leeds United this weekend will be a big occasion for his side.

Cocu’s side will head to Yorkshire to take on Marcelo Bielsa’s side on Saturday (21st September, 12:30pm kick-off).

Leeds are flying high in the Sky Bet Championship and, following their 2-0 victory at Barnsley on Sunday, sit top of the table.

Derby returned to action following the first international break of the season last Friday with a 1-1 draw against Cardiff City at Pride Park Stadium.

They had chances to claim all three points against the Bluebirds but were left frustrated, despite an encouraging performance.

The visit to Elland Road will see Derby return to the venue where they enjoyed one of their most memorable results in recent years back in May.

They turned around a 1-0 Play-Off Semi-Final First Leg defeat to win 4-2 in the Second Leg at Elland Road to reach the Championship Play-Off Final, with a devastating attacking display.

Since then Derby have seen a change in manager and to personnel in the squad and Cocu is relishing the chance to take on the league leaders.

He told RamsTV: “It will be a big occasion, absolutely. They play very well and are a very good team.

“It is a game of football, anything is possible. If we can bring our game to this match, we know we can be a hard team to beat.

“It is a difficult game, but it is always possible to get a result.

“They can play football, but we can play as well.”

He added: “We have to show our performance against Cardiff was not just a single game, we need to do it again against Leeds and then against Birmingham after that.”

Derby’s three league games this season have seen Cocu’s side claim four points from a possible nine, including a 2-1 opening day victory at Huddersfield Town last month.
