Derby County are five games unbeaten going into the October international break and striker Martyn Waghorn believes putting together a string of results could prove to be pivotal as the season unfolds.

The Rams picked up nine points during the batch of fixtures between international breaks, which included two wins and three draws.

Both of those victories came at Pride Park Stadium, with the first a key 3-2 victory against Birmingham City.

The Rams disposed of Luton Town on Saturday, with a 2-0 win, to go into the break with 15 points from their opening 11 fixtures, and they sit five points off the play-off positions.

“I would say that we have been a bit inconsistent,” Waghorn told The Derby County Show, reflecting on the opening two months of the season.

“We know that we could have picked up more points along the way but towards the last few weeks we are unbeaten.

“We could have been in a better situation but in the grand scheme of things, in this division it is about putting runs together and not dropping points.

“We are five unbeaten going into the break so it’s a steady run of fixtures.”

He continued: “Going into the last break, we needed it. It wasn’t a great set of fixtures or results and it shows you how quickly this league can turn around.

“We now wish that we could just keep playing games. They come around thick and fast but you do need a break when it comes because you know how busy the schedule gets.

“You take the break as it comes, it gives us a chance to reflect on what we can do better. Set pieces have been a bit of an achillies heel for us but it’s something to work on.

“It’s a chance for the boys to have a break, get ready and go again.”
