Phillip Cocu has stressed the need for Derby County to conclude their 2019/20 season in a positive manner this week.

Derby will conclude their campaign with an away fixture at Birmingham City on Wednesday evening (7:30pm kick-off).

Cocu wants his side to arrest a run of four successive defeats in the Sky Bet Championship in what will be their final fixture of the regular league campaign.

The run of defeats, all against sides in the division’s top six, has come off the back of a five-game winning run which propelled the Rams into the play-off race.

Derby still have a top-half finish to play for, while Birmingham are still not mathematically safe in the division for another season.

While it may appear from the outside that the Rams have nothing to play for, Cocu says it is certainly not the case.

“For me it is vital,” Cocu told RamsTV when asked how important it is for Derby to end the season on a positive note.

“It is strange because there is nothing at stake, but that doesn’t matter. A few weeks ago, we had five wins in a row. Now we haven’t won in five.

“That is the league we are in, but it is up to us to change it.”

He added: “You always want to end your season in a positive way, but it will be hard because they have something to play for still.”
