Wayne Rooney was clearly an unhappy man after seeing Derby County fall to a 3-0 defeat at Rotherham United on Wednesday night.

Michael Ihiekwe, Michael Smith and Ryan Giles scored in the final 15 minutes as Rotherham claimed all three points the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Derby’s three-game winning run came to an end in disappointing fashion against the Millers in their latest Sky Bet Championship.

Lee Gregory missed a chance to score on his debut shortly after coming off the bench and within a few minutes the home side had grasped control of the match.

Once they were behind, Rooney admitted his side were always likely to be vulnerable on the counter- attack as they chased for a way back into the game.

“I am not happy, obviously,” Rooney told RamsTV.

“I am disappointed with the scoreline and think we could have done better.

“We had a chance just before they took the lead and we should have scored and then from a set piece we conceded a sloppy goal.

“From that point we were chasing the game, which allowed them to hit us on the break and score the second and third. It was a disappointing result and we knew it was going to be a difficult game tonight.

“We know small margins decide games and if we had scored first then I think we could have gone on to win the game.”

He added: “There is another game coming up on Saturday and we know how we have to react to this result.

“We did that after the 1-0 defeat to Rotherham last time, in January, and we need to do the same again.”

Derby return to Sky Bet Championship action on Saturday when they travel to Barnsley (7pm kick-off).
