PLAYER NEWS: New signing Brereton Diaz jets off to join Chile squad

Derby County’s new signing Ben Brereton Diaz has jetted off on international duty with Chile.

The forward, who can play in several attacking positions, joined the Rams on a season-long loan deal from Southampton on Sunday to become the club’s 13th summer addition.

He was selected for the senior Chile squad - qualifying through his mother - for the first time in 2021 and he has gone on to make 35 international appearances, scoring seven goals, while he has represented his nation at two Copa América tournaments.

Brereton Diaz has been called up for Chile’s final two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers away to Brazil on Thursday 4th September and at home to Uruguay on Tuesday 9th September.

Chile are bottom of their ten-team qualifying group, with two wins and four draws from 16 matches, and are unable to reach next summer’s major tournament.

Brereton Diaz will link up with the Derby squad for the first time in the days leading up to the Sky Bet Championship fixture at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday 13th September (3pm kick-off).
