PLAYER NEWS: New signing Johnston called up by Scotland

Derby County’s new signing Max Johnston has been called up for international duty by the Scotland national side.

Johnston, who is 21, joined Derby from Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz on Wednesday evening for an undisclosed fee and on a contract until the summer of 2029.

After making the move in 2023, he won the league title in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns and also the Austrian Cup in his first year abroad.

Johnston also gained significant experience in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League competitions during his time with Sturm Graz.

The right-back, who made his senior debut for Scotland’s national side earlier this year in the UEFA Nations League against Greece, was the Scottish Young Player of the Year in 2022/23 whilst with Motherwell prior to moving to Austria.

The former Scotland youth international will look to add to his two international caps in Scotland’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers away to Denmark on Friday 5th September (7:45pm kick-off) and Belarus on Monday 8th September (7:45pm kick-off).
