REPORT: Loughborough Lightning Women 0-1 Derby County Women

Derby County Women got their 2026 underway with a 1-0 victory at Loughborough Lightning on Sunday.

The twice-postponed FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division fixture marked the debut of Ebonie Locke following her signing on loan from Birmingham City earlier this month.

After a quiet opening half hour, chances flowed for both sides, but it was goalless at the break.

Olivia Edwards headed the Ewes in front eight minutes after the break, and Sam Griffiths’ side remained defensively resilient to leave Loughborough with three points.

Key Moments

The first effort of the afternoon fell the way of the hosts after five minutes, but the 20-yard shot was simple for Lucy Jones.

Derby’s first opportunity came in the eighth minute, when Chenè Muir spotted keeper Alicia Grimmond off her line, but lobbed the ball wide of her left-hand post.

Another chance nearly fell the way of Lucy Mutch in the 12th minute, but debutant Ebonie Locke and goalkeeper Jones communicated well to see the ball away from danger.

A 14th-minute corner from Kenzy Collingbourne provided a chance for Mutch, whose effort was cleared off the line. The follow-up prompted a goal-mouth scramble, which left Jones requiring treatment.

After Lightning broke from a Derby free kick on the right, Becky May made a brilliant sliding block to stop Collyer’s near-post shot from troubling Jones.

Minnie Wilson won Derby’s first corner in the 28th minute, but her delivery was headed away at the front post.

The best chance of the first half came in the 35th minute, when Collyer got on the end of a ball from deep down the inside-left channel and forced Jones to push the ball wide from a tight angle.

From the resulting corner, Becky Hogg then headed over the bar from six yards out.

Derby ended the first half brightly: Minnie Wilson’s corner was met by the head of Edwards and only cleared as far as Emily Joyce, who worked the hosts’ keeper.

In stoppage time, Muir latched onto a Locke through ball to weave her way into a shooting position, but she was denied by a deflection at the near post.

A goal-saving clearance then denied Joyce from close range following a corner, before May’s effort from range was held.

Up the other end, Hogg shot high and wide in a frantic end to the first 45.

HALF-TIME: Loughborough Lightning 0-0 Derby County

Edwards was first to work Grimmond in the second half, but her 30-yard strike did not trouble the hosts' number one.

The Ewes’ opener came from a deep corner to the back post, where Edwards looped a header over the keeper at the far post.

Derby had a chance for a second two minutes later, but Wilson fired wide with Grimmond off her line.

Loughborough had a golden chance for an equaliser when Ella Jarowicki scooped a pass out to Hogg on the left, but Jones stood strong to deny her.

Next, Muir was denied by a deflection after connecting with another line-breaking pass from Wilson.

Derby had the ball in the net again with 11 minutes to play, as Wilson acrobatically finished Yasmin Mason’s swerving cross, but was adjudged to be offside.

Moments later, substitute Kate Oakley was one-on-one with the keeper but curled her shot wide.

Collyer went close as Lightning pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Sam Griffiths’ side held firm to get the new year off to a winning start.

Derby County Women: Jones (GK), Mason, Edwards, Joyce, Ward, Wilson, Wheeler, Locke, May, Sparkes, Muir (Oakley 76).

Unused Substitutes: Wayne (GK); Bryan, Skeldon, Drake, Shepherd.
