In their first home outing of 2026, Derby County Women fell to a 4-0 defeat against Middlesbrough in the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division on Sunday.

The visitors opened the scoring before the break, when Armani Maxwell’s thunderous strike rattled the crossbar and Becky Ferguson was there to tap in the rebound.
Three further goals in the second half, courtesy of Maxwell, captain Millie Bell and a composed finish from substitute Niyah Dunbar, saw Boro claim all three points at the Don Amott Arena.
Sam Griffiths’ Ewes will look to bounce back next weekend as they travel to take on Halifax.
It was a closely-fought contest in the early stages in Mickleover, but the first sight of the goal went the way of the Ewes. Forward Chenè Muir let fly from the edge of the box, and her effort rattled against the post before bouncing wide.
Muir then threatened again inside the opening quarter of an hour, picking up the ball outside the box following Yasmin Mason’s mazy run forward down the left flank and firing an effort at goal, but Middlesbrough goalkeeper Megan Borthwick collected it comfortably.
Boro broke forward soon after with a dangerous counter-attack. Armani Maxwell found space out wide and delivered a pinpoint cross towards Lauren Robson in the box, but her tame effort was saved by Lucy Jones.
Maxwell’s dangerous corner in the 22nd minute caused chaos in the Derby box, but the Ewes held firm with a series of crucial blocks to keep the score level.

Later in the half, Hannah Sparkes’s deep free-kick from the right caused problems for the Boro backline as it evaded everyone and dropped for Hannah Ward at the back post. The defender was unable to get full contact on it at full-stretch, and it bounced narrowly wide.
Soon after, Minnie Wilson tried her luck with a powerful strike from 30 yards out, but it flew just wide of the left-hand post.
Middlesbrough then broke forward, and Becky Ferguson fired a low driven effort towards goal from outside the box, but it failed to trouble Ewes ‘keeper Jones as it drifted wide of the post.
Boro opened the scoring in the 40th minute. Robson delivered a fantastic ball into Maxwell, who cut inside and fired a shot off the crossbar. The rebound fell to Ferguson, who tapped into an empty net to put the visitors ahead.

Carrying the momentum ahead of the break, goalscorer Ferguson broke forward again for Boro shortly after. The striker drove forward from deep in the Derby half before unleashing a venomous effort that sailed over the bar.
The visitors doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second period. After a neat passage of play, which saw Boro work the ball through midfield, it dropped for Maxwell 20 yards out. The forward slotted into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
Middlesbrough added a third goal on the hour mark courtesy of captain Millie Bell. Abby Towers’ free-kick found Bell in space, and she glanced an excellent header beyond Jones.
Boro continued to pile on the pressure after their third. The ball fell to Robson just inside the box, and her first-time shot was blocked by the outstretched leg of Sparkes.
A flurry of chances followed for the Ewes as the hosts searched for a way back into the contest. First, Olivia Edwards tried an audacious effort from distance, which failed to trouble Boro goalkeeper Borthwick.

Muir then came close in the 70th minute as she found herself through on goal, but her strike from a wide angle was saved by Borthwick, who produced a reflex save with her feet.
Soon after, substitute Ché Thomas, brought on to inject pace and attacking threat on the flank for the Ewes, blazed an effort over the bar from distance.
As the game entered its closing stages, the ball dropped kindly for Boro substitute Niyah Dunbar in the box, and she made no mistake. The forward coolly opened up her body and slotted into the bottom right corner to seal a 4-0 victory for the visitors.
