‘I Had Itchy Feet To Get Started Again’

The summer break will have felt a distant memory for Derby County’s players today.

Gary Rowett’s squad reported back for pre-season duty this morning and were met by a gruelling first day of fitness testing at the University of Derby.

“I was pale again after that,” Nugent told RamsTV after completing his set of fitness tests.

“It was tough. We had to reach a certain level, which I think we have all managed to do and get through, and hopefully the gaffer is pleased.

“Playing football is the reason that we go through this. We all wanted to come back fitter and whilst a lot of running is involved, the footballs get introduced a lot earlier nowadays.”

Whilst pre-season may represent, arguably, one of the toughest times of the year for a footballer, Nugent has said that he had ‘itchy feet’ to get started again.

After signing from Middlesbrough in January, the 32-year-old enjoyed a strong start to life as a Ram.

In 18 appearances in all competitions, the forward netted six goals – which included a hat-trick against Fulham at Pride Park Stadium – whilst his workman-like and tireless performances quickly endeared him to the club’s supporters.

Having already mentioned that he is naturally keen to pick up where he left off last campaign, Nugent is looking forward to getting stuck into the hard work Rowett has got planned over pre-season.

He added: “I’ve had a good break, but it was good to get back into this. When the fixtures come out, you know it isn’t too far away.

“I’ve had itchy feet wanting to get back, see all the boys again and get back down to work.

“I’m sure it will be as quiet as anything tomorrow now because we have got another tough day in store.

“It’s nice to see them all again, we have all had a good break, but I think we’re all ready for what is ahead.”
