Derby County have completed a deadline day swoop for Sheffield Wednesday forward Sam Winnall – with midfielder Jacob Butterfield moving in the opposite direction.
Winnall will spend the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship campaign at Pride Park Stadium on a season-long loan deal, while Butterfield has sealed a similar switch to Hillsborough.
Winnall, 26, will add to the attacking options available to manager Gary Rowett and becomes the Rams’ fifth summer signing, following the previous arrivals of Curtis Davies, Andre Wisdom, Tom Huddlestone and Tom Lawrence.
He scored 11 goals for Barnsley in the first half of last season before sealing a switch to Wednesday, where he hit the net three further times as the Owls secured a play-off berth for the second season in a row.
Winnall has made three appearances for Wednesday so far this season and scored in their 1-1 draw at home to Queens Park Rangers earlier this month.
He started his playing career at Wolverhampton Wanderers before having loan spells at Burton Albion, Hereford United, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Shrewsbury Town to gain first-team experience.
During his time at Burton, Rowett was assistant manager to the then Brewers boss and former Rams striker Paul Peschisolido.
Winnall joined Scunthorpe United in the summer of 2013 and scored 23 times in 49 appearances as they gained promotion from League 2 before sealing a switch to Barnsley a year later and, during his time at Oakwell, he hit the net on 48 occasions in 116 appearances.
Winnall scored 24 goals as he helped the Tykes to promotion from Sky Bet League 1 via the play-offs and lift the Football League Trophy in 2015/16, before maintaining his fine form at the start of last season prior to linking up with Sheffield Wednesday.
Butterfield, meanwhile, has made 89 appearances since joining Derby on transfer deadline day two years ago from Huddersfield Town.
He failed to start any of the Rams’ last three league games after starting the first two matches of the campaign.
Both players will be unable to face their parent clubs under the terms of the loan agreement.
