Scott Carson says it’s ‘ideal for everyone’ that Gary Rowett has signed a new contract with Derby County.

The Derby boss last week put pen-to-paper on a new contract until the summer of 2021.

Rowett, who took charge at Pride Park Stadium towards the back end of last season, has overseen the Rams’ impressive rise up the Sky Bet Championship table.

The side sit second in the table and the goalkeeper believes the 43-year-old is a perfect fit for Derby.

He told RamsTV: “It’s ideal for everyone that the manager has signed a new contract.

“When the rumours came out (linking him with a move away) I think the last thing we needed as a club and a group of players is another manager.

“Everyone is backing the manager and he’s backing us, which is what we need. I think he is a perfect fit for the club and thankfully he will be here for the next few years.”

Carson says confidence is high in the Derby camp following a fine run of form in recent months.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper says it’s important that the Rams recognise they are going to face some challenging periods between now and the end of the season.

For Carson, the key is how the Rams handle those moments to ensure they retain their confidence and belief.

He said: “We know there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs between now and the end of the season.

“We have to try and maintain our form and try and stay where we are; that’s the biggest thing.

“It’s natural to lose games in the Championship so when we do, it will be important to maintain our confidence.

“We know we are capable of beating anyone on our day so hopefully we can stay up at the top end of the table.”
