Johnson Praises ‘Fantastic’ Davies

Derby County ambassador Michael Johnson believes Curtis Davies deserves credit for his ‘fantastic’ performances this season.

The experienced centre-back joined Derby from Hull City for an undisclosed fee last June to become Gary Rowett’s first summer signing.

Davies has started all 28 of the Rams’ Sky Bet Championship matches so far this term, helping the side to 14 clean sheets in the process.

He also got his name on the scoresheet with a fine header in the Rams’ 5-0 win against his former club at Pride Park Stadium in September.

The former England Under-21 international has formed a fine relationship with skipper Richard Keogh in central defence and the pair have been in impressive form all season.

Johnson, who made 138 appearances for Derby between 2003 and 2008, says Davies reminds him of a classic ‘old-school’ defender.

The former Derby defender told RamsTV’s Review Show earlier this week: “Curtis has been fantastic all season alongside Richard Keogh.

“He’s made blocks, tackles and won plenty of defensive headers. He is also very good at organising as well in the defence.

“I said after the Bristol City game that Curtis maybe isn’t easy on the eye and what I mean by that is he isn’t a dribbler or someone that pings 60 yard passes across the pitch.

“However, if you’re someone that loves your football and really likes to analyse a defensive display, I really do suggest you watch Curtis play and how he goes about his business.”

The 44-year-old added: “He does everything that a defender needs to, like an old-school defender, and he has been brilliant.

“I remember the likes of Terry Butcher, Des Walker and Tony Adams growing up and there aren’t too many of them around nowadays.”
