Derby County Under-23s forward Charles Vernam has joined Sky Bet League 2 side Grimsby Town on loan.

Vernam has linked up with the Mariners for the remainder of the 2017/18 season in a bid to gain more first-team experience.

Grimsby, managed by Russell Slade, sit 15th in League 2 and the 21-year-old could make his debut in their home fixture against Newport County on Saturday.

Vernam has impressively progressed through the Rams’ Academy system after joining from Scunthorpe United in 2012.

The switch to Blundell Park will be the third loan spell of his career after he spent time out on loan at Icelandic side ÍB Vestmannaeyja in the summer of 2016 and then Coventry City in League 1 last term.

He made his debut for Derby’s first-team as a late substitute in last season’s Emirates FA Cup Third Round victory at Premier League side West Bromwich Albion, prior to linking up with Coventry.

The frontman missed the opening months of this season after he suffered a chondral defect in his knee back in April but has been featuring regularly at Under-23 level since October.

Vernam is the second Rams youngster to move out on loan during this transfer window, after Max Lowe linked up with League 1 Shrewsbury Town in a similar deal towards the end of last week.
