Full back Max Lowe is no stranger to cup runs following his exploits with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen last season as they reached the Scottish League Cup final.

Whilst the Dons would eventually lose that game 1-0 to Celtic at Hampden Park, Lowe felt the experience helped him become a better player.

Fast forward nine months and he is set to embark on another cup journey, this time, the Carabao Cup with Derby County.

“Firstly, I think cup runs are great because young players can get some good exposure,” he told RamsTV.

“Aberdeen and Derby both had good cup runs last season and hopefully it will be the same this season.

“At Aberdeen we got to the final against Celtic. That was my first final so it was massive for me. We went into the game knowing that we weren’t favourites and I think that helped us.

“We liked playing on the back-foot and counter-attacking at Aberdeen. It was disappointing to be close, but we pretty much played a perfect game by our standards of football but we weren’t able to get a goal.

“Hats off to Celtic because they have done the treble-treble and they are not an easy team to beat.”

Last season, Lowe had to watch on as the Rams reached the fourth round of the competition, eventually losing out 3-2 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

However, this season, he is back and is likely to feature in the game following the injury sustained to Jayden Bogle.

The 19-year-old was forced off during Saturday’s goalless draw against Swansea City and he was replaced by Lowe who made his first appearance of the season.

“It was a bit of mixed emotions because I am really close to Bogle,” he said. “Jayden has done really well and started the game really well.

“He was a dangerman for us, he got the penalty for us as well. It was unfortunate to see him go down, but I tried to take my opportunity, even if it was at right-back.

“I thought we did enough to get the win on Saturday, but we will take the clean sheet and the draw.”

Whilst the defender did have to play out of position, he adapted well and explained the differences between the two.

“It is more about body positioning because my left is my stronger foot, but I spoke to Liam [Rosenior] and he said I don’t have to open up and use my right. My left foot is there for a reason so if I can to try and come back on to my left, then do it,” Lowe commented.

“I haven’t played with Florian [Jozefzoon] before, so he talked me through a lot of stuff during the game as well.

“It is all new experiences and I am only going to benefit from it in the future because you never know, I might have to play there again. It was a good test for me though and I enjoyed it.”

The Rams have enjoyed an unbeaten start to this season so far, whilst tomorrow’s opponents Scunthorpe United have not enjoyed the same fortune.

They are yet to register a point and sit bottom of Sky Bet League Two, however, Lowe knows it will be a tough test.

“They are going to be itching to play against Derby County, a really good Championship team,” Lowe said. “With the start that we’ve had, they are going to be looking at that thinking they want to have a go.

“We are going to be ready for that. In the first two league games, I think everyone has seen how solid we have been and it is just working on from there and trying to get goals and be a bit more creative.”
