Bobby Davison Blasts Derby Back To The First Division

Bobby Davison is pictured here turning away in celebration after scoring the goal which secured Derby County’s return to the First Division back in May 1987.

Derby were 2-1 winners over Leeds United at the Baseball Ground on 2nd May 1987 and Davison’s fine header secured all three points for Arthur Cox’s side.

Phil Gee had earlier blasted the Rams ahead before Davison doubled the lead with a fine header from Gary Micklewhite’s cross.

Leeds did pull a goal back in the second half, but Derby weren’t to be denied as they recorded back-to-back promotions to return to the top-flight with two games to spare.

The Rams went on to finish as Champions too as they marked their return to the First Division in style.

Davison was a key member of the side under Cox and his record of 106 goals in 248 appearances is a hugely impressive statistic.

His uncanny habit of finding the back of the net saw him firmly established as a Baseball Ground favourite in the 1980s.
