Derby County will face Manchester City Under-21s at Pride Park Stadium on Tuesday night in their final Papa Johns Trophy Northern Section Group F fixture of the 2022/23 season - and know a win either in normal time or via penalties following a draw will see them reach the knockout stages (7pm kick-off).

In the lead-up to the game getting underway, dcfc.co.uk has brought together all the key information you need to know…

Team News

Striker James Collins is available for selection and could feature as his three match ban, for his red card in the 2-1 home defeat to Port Vale earlier this month, only applies to Sky Bet League One fixtures.

Midfielder Conor Hourihane was not involved in the 3-0 victory at Accrington Stanley on Tuesday after injuring his calf in training last week. The Republic of Ireland international is not expected to feature in midweek, with the key focus on having him back in the squad for the Friday night trip to Ipswich Town.

Defender Craig Forsyth was absent from the matchday squad for Saturday’s 3-0 success at Accrington Stanley owing to illness, so he will have his situation monitored with a view to returning to the squad.

Goalkeeper Joseph Anang remains out of action as he waits for the green light to return to training after injuring his arm in training only days after joining the club on loan from West Ham United in August.

Coaching Staff Views

First Team Coach Matt Hamshaw spoke to the media on Monday afternoon to preview the Rams' final Papa Johns Trophy Northern Section - Group F fixture.

He said: "We know that if we win that we’re through to the next round, it is as simple as that. This will be a good test for us and it is a chance to use the squad again and get the minutes up for some of the lads that need them, especially if they’re needed in the next few weeks. We also want to implement a few more things that we’ve been working on in training. We prepare for each game the same so we are preparing for this one against Manchester City’s Under-21s in the same way we will get ready for Ipswich Town on Friday. We are not disrespectful to competitions or our opponents and we treat every game like it is the players’ last. We have a process here and we don’t want to step away from that, because if you start doing that it devalues competitions. We have done our preparation work and the lads will know what they are up against. Manchester City have a top-class Academy and I am sure whoever they name in their side, they’ll give us a real test. I know their Development Squad Manager Brian Barry-Murphy and he’s a good guy who plays a good style of football. However, we are at home and we want to be on the front foot, so we will look to take the game to them."

From The Dressing Room

Attacking midfielder Louie Sibley caught up with RamsTV to look ahead to the Rams' Papa Johns Trophy clash and also reflect on the 3-0 success at Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

He said: "It is another chance to play and we want to win. We know if we do that, we’re through to the next round. The gaffer spoke when he arrived about making sure we take every game seriously, so we want to put on a performance and get another victory. It is a new competition for us this year and, for me, I have played a lot in the cups this season. Every match is a chance to catch the eye and opportunities to impress always come around. We might be facing an Under-21 team from Manchester City, but they have very good players there and they are a top side at their level. We will prepare properly, like normal, and hopefully we can do what we need to do on the pitch."

Papa Johns Trophy Match Format

If the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes then each club is awarded one point. In addition, the match will be followed by a penalty shoot-out and the club that wins on spot-kicks will be awarded an additional one point.

Papa Johns Trophy Substitute Rules

In the Papa Johns Trophy, each club is permitted to name up to seven substitutes on their team sheet, of whom not more than five may take part in the cup tie.

Each club is only permitted a maximum of three opportunities to make substitutions during the game, although clubs may make substitutions at half time and any that are made will not count towards the maximum of three opportunities.
