Match Report: Derby County 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers

Derby County were held to a 1-1 draw by Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

A late strike from substitute Tom Barkhuizen looked to have been enough to secure the victory for the Rams but a penalty with the very last kick of the game snatched a point for the visitors.

Key Moments

The first chance of the day went the way of Derby and it was the man that opened the scoring versus Leyton Orient that very nearly did the same here.

Lovely interplay down the right between Joe Ward and Kane Wilson saw the latter play in Sibley. The midfielder took a touch beyond his man and fired an effort just wide of the far post.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing had a goalbound effort blocked by a defender as the Rams continued to search for a breakthrough in a half of very few clear-cut chances.

Wycombe's Kieran Sadlier fired over with the visitors' first shot of the day before James Collins directed an effort just wide following a Ward cross up the other end.

The second-half started in very similar fashion to the first but the Rams were agonisingly close to taking the lead on the hour mark through Wilson.

Ward dug out a brilliant cross from the right which Wilson connected with but he couldn't get a clean contact on his effort and it was hooked off of the line by a Wycombe defender.

Minutes later and the Chairboys were blocking another off of the goal line but this time it was keeper Max Stryjek with an outstanding save. The defender rose highest to connect with a Ward corner but his header was somehow clawed off the line by the Wycombe stopper.

It looked like it was going to be one of those days in Derbyshire but the Rams kept plugging and found a winner with under 10 minutes remaining.

Mendez-Laing cut inside from the right and got a shot away which Stryjek could only parry into the path of Barkhuizen who was there to fire into an empty net from close range.

Pride Park held its breath when substitute Kane Vincent-Young fired inches wide in added time.

And just when Derby thought they'd done enough to hang on, the visitors were awarded a penalty with the very last action of the game when Ward was adjudged to have fouled his man in the area.

Luke Leahy stepped up and sent Joe Wildsmith the wrong way to break Derby hearts and ensure both sides had to settle for a point.
