Post-Match Verdict: ‘Thoroughly Deserved The Win’ - Warne

Derby County Head Coach Paul Warne believes his side were thoroughly deserving of their 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Curtis Nelson's first half header was enough to seal another three points for the Rams, who made it eight unbeaten, of which seven have been victories, in Sky Bet League One on Boxing Day.

Speaking to RamsTV after the match at the DW Stadiu, the Head Coach gave his verdict on an impressive performance on the road.

On the result...

I thought we played really well. I'd like to thank all the fans that got behind the lads and the they justified my trust in them, so that pleases me no end. I think it was our best overall performance this season and, apart from the last six or seven minutes when they threw everything at us and we had to stand up and be counted, I thought we were largely in control and deserved our win.

On what he liked about the performance...

It's difficult to play against Wigan, so I liked how the lads took on the detail. I liked our energy and our confidence on the ball and I liked when called upon we could do the ugly stuff. It would have taken some goal to beat Cash and Nels today as I thought they were colossal at the back. There was some hard running from Collo up top and some really good one and two touch play in the first half. It looked as much as one of my teams as I've ever seen it.

On Curtis Nelson...

He was fired up today to say the least and the goalkeeper made a great save off of Kane Wilson just before his goal. We had a few opportunities to add a second goal today but I think we got what we deserved. A clean sheet and a win is really pleasing.

On the travelling support...

The fact that we were shooting towards our fans in the second half was good and I appreciate everyone's effort who came. To watch your team on Boxing Day, that's a proper day out. When I'm not in football in the future, I'll still go to a game on Boxing Day. Getting out the house and watching your team play and win on Boxing Day is great.
