CLUB NEWS: John Newman (1933-2025)

Derby County is saddened to learn about the passing of former manager John Newman, aged 91.

Newman managed the Rams in 1982 when he stepped up into the role after operating as assistant manager to Colin Addison in the years prior.

The Hereford-born former central defender began his playing career with Birmingham City in 1951, and he was part of the Blues side that won the Second Division that year and reached the FA Cup Final in 1956.

Newman racked up over 500 games in league football, with moves to Leicester City, Plymouth Argyle, and Exeter City.

He appeared over 300 times for Argyle between 1960 and 1967 before moving to Exeter, where he became player-manager and then manager across seven years with the Devon club.

Three years at the helm of Grimsby Town followed before he linked up with Addison at Derby and took charge at the Baseball Ground between January and November 1982, departing after three years of service to the club.

Newman became the manager of his hometown club, Hereford United, in March of the following year, where he spent just under five years.

He also had several stints in coaching after Hereford, including with York City in the following years.

The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Derby County are with John Newman’s family and friends at this time.
